The Dark Side of The Force

Posted by Luna under Clay, Movies, W1k Submission

OMG this was sooo much fun to make!!! It was for another W1K contest: Star Wars: The Dark Side. We had to choose a Star Wars villain to make from clay.

I did pretty darn good. I came in second with a 7.839. First place was unbelievable! Johnrmcconnell is my clay hero… His Wampa Attack was so awesome it was practically disgusting! LMAO Also in the contest were Pac0daTac0‘s Bobba Fett (my personal favorite bad guy, but I didn’t have the chops to try & pull that off yet… my hat’s off to him!) and mennufer‘s Jabba the Hut, post mortem. It’s crazy to say… but it was fricken adorable! I know… Jabba… adorable??? But yes, it was!

Here’s a WiP of Jabba.

A slimy piece of worm-ridden filth… I chose Jabba since I’m pretty new with the whole clay thing.

When I started this, my intent was to just do Jabba, but what’s Jabba without his throne… or Salacious Crumb… or Bib Fortuna? So, I made them all.

I first made his platform from styrofoam and air dry clay, but it cracked horribly and once I put the hooka & back piece on, Jabba’s tail hung off the end. So I made another larger one from cardboard covered with a sheet of foil and a super thin layer of polymer. I was totally nervous when I baked it & sat on the floor in front of the oven watching it. Then I realized I had this large blank space in the back corner and the Jawa was added. His frond fan was a major pain. I made 3 different ones before I got one that wasn’t so heavy it bent the wire used to make the stem.

I was dreading the little cyclops pig spouts on the front of the throne until I came up with the idea of making one and them making a mold from it. It really helped out a lot!

Mobiles-A-Plenty

Posted by Luna under Clay, Home Decor, W1k Submission

This week at Worth1000 I entered 4 mobiles in a contest. I came in 1st, 3ed, 4th & 5th. I ended up winning all 3 trophies though since 2nd place didn’t pay for their entry. Always kinda a bummer to win a trophy by default, but I’ll take it! LOL Incidentally, these all gave me scores in the 7′s (out of 10) & are now my 2-5th highest scores!

Here were my 4 entries (in order of placement)…

The original Super Mario Bros. is one of only 2 video games I actually played… myself… to the end… The other was the original Legend of Zelda. Then they all went and got too fancy for me. LOL

I made this completely out of clay and wire. I’m actually not sure which was harder… making all the pieces or assembling it! I grossly underestimated the weight of all the pieces when they were put together and I ended up having to super glue a lot of the posts back in to most of the pieces. The little blue separators were a huge pain to make, especially when I was assembling it and realized I was 1 short! The entire piece is over 3 feet long.

I made this both for the contest and for my daughter who loves this movie.

It’s made completely of clay and the top piece is three dimensional. The sky, moon, hill, tombstones, fence & pumpkins were all made separately then super glued together… along with two of my fingers! You laugh, but (sadly) I’m not joking. :P

This was (obviously) inspired buy the most awesomest childhood board game ever! My siblings & I played it so much Santa had to bring us a new one every year. This was also the case with my children.

Originally, I wanted to make the characters for the dangles, but I knew I wouldn’t have enough time. So, I made the treats they represented.

There are a total of 99 tiles. Each was made of hand looped wire sandwiched between 2 tiles of clay. Yes, that means I had to cut out 198 squares. On 3 (a yellow gumdrop, a blue lollipop & a red fudgesicle) I added a black dot that, in the game, you could get stuck on.

The header is a 6″ round piece of wood painted brown. The edge is covered in snow tex to simulate frosting. Going around it are different types of treats (including a stack of Pez candy for my husband lol). In between those are the pink squares with the different character symbols like on the game board. And you’d soooo be lieing if you said you never tried to stack the deck to get Queen Frostine’s card!!

Here are some closeups of the dangles and header.

For the ghosts, I made a cardboard template so they would be uniform in size. The ghost in the middle looks black, but it’s actually dark blue.

Here are some WiP photos of the pieces…

Under the Sea Diorama

Posted by Luna under Clay, Diorama, W1k Submission

This W1k contest was a HxH between me and Kookaburra. The theme was Under the Sea Diorama. Besides winning, I got my highest score ever… 8.927. My first 8 ever! And Kookaburra’s Turtle Heaven was damn awesome too!!

Here’s a larger version so you can see some more of the details.

We could use anything we wanted to build this diorama, but I went with mostly clay because I was able to get more detail than if I were to make it from anything else & buying artificial corals from a pet store was way to expensive! LOL

The base was made from styrofoam that I covered with a mixture of white sand and Elmer’s glue. Once I got it assembled, I realized that the shark was too low so I built a larger base. Then I saw a few more blank spots that were just to big to leave empty. So I added the mermaid and coral spirals in the back left corner. The yellow submarine was my daughter’s idea for the spot under the arch. There was a blank space where the base met the side and it looked awkward.

Here are some WiP and detail shots…
